The lusts we follow after will remove the desire for truth.

John 8:44
"You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
The desires of self will cause us to defend the lies of the devil.
The lusts we follow after will remove the desire for truth
and leave our heart cold towards the gospel of Christ.
If we love Christ, we will run from youthful lusts;
we will keep the truth of scripture as a precious jewel;
we will guard righteousness in our heart
and put on holiness as a garment.
