New Testament Verses

Romans 1

The wrath of God towards sin.

Romans 1v18 'For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;'

Sin stands in opposition to the nature and character of God. The love of sin is directly opposed to the holiness of God. He is holy and righteous; He is faithful and true; He is love and full of compassion; He is merciful and gracious. But God is also just and He cannot act in an unjust manner. He must condemn sin and cannot allow sin to go unpunished. God cannot deny Himself.

Our hearts are evil and deceptive. Good works can never change the heart. The Pharisees appeared to be godly but they were lovers of themselves and the enemies of the gospel. They were respected as religious leaders in the community but their hearts were evil. The Pharisees kept the Jewish feasts and traditions but this did not remove the wrath of God. It is a great deception to believe that the sacraments of the church can remove the wrath of God.

The gospel message is that Jesus took the wrath of God towards sin on our behalf. We are all born with a self centred, sinful nature and are by nature the children of wrath. There was no one else who could stand in our place as our substitute except the sinless Son of God Himself. He came for this purpose to save His people from their sins. He is the gift of God to all who will put their trust in Him, but those who reject Him and hold the truth in unrighteousness will one day face the eternal wrath of God. Now is the day of salvation.
