Theme: Joy the Characteristic of Worship
Text: 1 Peter 1:8 "...you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory."
Introduction
A Spirit-filled believer naturally experiences joy. Rather than seeking new evangelistic methods, the Church requires worshippers who authentically share the joy of knowing Christ. Many believers lack joy because they have not approached the throne in genuine worship.
Joy represents the barometer of one's relationship depth with Jesus and measures both individual Christian experience and the Holy Spirit's movement within local congregations. Joy serves as greater evidence of God's presence than speaking in tongues.
The Welsh Revival (1904)
One convert from that season reported: "I have wept a pool of tears...and they were the gladdest tears I ever knew." Genuine revivals display both grief (awareness of sin) and joy (forgiveness and restored relationship).
Main Teaching Points
1. Joyless Christians Cannot Effectively Attract Others
Without joy, authentic worship cannot occur. Worshippers are fundamentally characterized by joyfulness. David understood that he needed God's joy to teach others the divine ways and minister effectively.
2. All Actions Must Represent Joyful Offerings
Everything—giving, service, and witnessing—should be offered to God "heartily" (from the soul). Only cheerful giving constitutes worship. Effective evangelism always carries joy, attracting people toward Christ.
3. Joy Must Permeate Every Worship Level
- Joy in believing (initial faith step)
- Joy in approaching worship
- Joy in thanksgiving and praise
- Joy in complete commitment and surrender
- Joy through Holy Spirit anointing
- Joy while suffering persecution for faith
- Joy in eternal purpose with Christ
- Joy in heavenly worship (future hope)
Summary
Believers need the Lord's joy to draw others toward Christ, execute all tasks with enthusiasm, and maintain joy throughout every worship dimension.
